When the mucus plug is discharged from the vagina it is known as a ‘show’. As well as being a physical barrier to bacteria and other things that could harm the foetus, the mucus plug also works with the body’s immune system to kill viruses and bacteria.
This mucus plug seals the entrance to the womb to protect the developing fetus. Early in pregnancy, mucus from the cervix thickens to form a plug.
